A column about the
Tyrone-Snyder Public Library
Check for updated information
about the library, its books, programs, and special events in this column
appearing bi-weekly on Thursdays in The Daily Herald.
This August the library will be holding Rev Up For Reading,
its first ever benefit motorcycle run. Registration for the bike run will begin
at the American Eagle Paper Mill parking lot on August 8th at 9 AM,
and kickstands will go up at 11 AM. The route for the dice run will take
participants on a 100 mile ride through Central Pennsylvania, with stops at
Glenn’s Place in Claysburg, Magoo’s Tavern in Cresson, and ending up back in
Tyrone at the Bullpen Restaurant, where there will be a dinner, door prizes, and
live entertainment from Flight 19. Registration fees include a limited edition
t-shirt and free admission to the dinner/dance at the Bullpen. For those of you
without motorcycles, the dance will be open to the public for a small cover
charge. For more information on the bike run, visit our website at http://www.tyronelibrary.org.
On August 12th from 6-7 PM the library will be hosting a seminar on
Pre-Retirement presented by the Social Security Administration. No matter what
your age, it¹s never too early to start
thinking about your retirement. When you do, you may have many questions such
as, “When’s the best time to start receiving retirement benefits?” “Can
I still work and receive a Social Security check?” How are Social Security
benefits calculated?” “What benefits are available for my spouse and
children?” These questions and many others will be answered at the
Pre-Retirement Seminar. Learn about planning for your retirement years and
how easy it is to apply on-line for retirement and Medicare benefits at www.socialsecurity.gov.
This seminar is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is recommended but
not mandatory.
The library will be participating in the Tyrone Merchants’ Association’s Dog
Days of Summer festival on August 14th from 10 AM-2 PM with a
celebrity story time in the hotel park across the street from the library
building and a bake sale of homemade dog treats featuring Colt’s Choice dog
biscuits—always a popular item with library patrons’ dogs at our bake sales.
We will also have personalized, hand-painted dog themed Christmas ornaments
available for a donation to the library.
The deadline for the final reading logs for children enrolled in our summer
reading program will be before the library closes at 2 PM this Saturday, July 31st.
The closing ceremony will be on August 5th from 6-7 PM. At the
closing ceremony prizes will be given to any child who completed the program’s
requirements, and grand prizes for the participants who read the most books in
their reader category will be rewarded. There will also be a sundae bar for the
participants in the library’s community room following the ceremony. The adult
summer reading program will continue through August, with weekly prize drawings
occurring every Monday.
That’s the news from the library—we hope to see you soon!
